Winter gets into your soul when you are a prairie person. That frost, the kaleidoscope of colour tunes into your heart's desire. This is a composite of a beautiful January wedding at Jasper, Alberta. The intent was to capture the essence of that special day for my daughter. Hence this one is not for sale. However, a print is possible and will be explored for anyone interested. When I stumble upon a simple little pond along an urban path I am often drawn into the vignette. This painting stemmed from such a collision of soul and site as I strolled along a familiar path near the Okanagan Canal. It's the colours and the light - pure, glittering, alive. I pause at this very spot every season and marvel at how it changes. That is what inspires me to paint. Capturing a moment of light and colour knowing it is unique and special. Time stands still.

"Marshland Melody" is a striking piece that captures the essence of a serene natural landscape within a compact 12" x 12" frame. The scene centers around a sunshine moment in the small marshland I discovered at a small mountain retreat I had the pleasure attending for a workshop a few years ago. Surrounded by lush vegetation in a harmonious mix of greens, yellows, and purples, it was the water's reflection mirroring that golden sunshine that invited me to lose myself in the tranquility.

In "Twisted Harmony," I've employed a bolder, impressionistic style to breathe life into this fantastical scene. The inspiration behind this work springs forth from the rugged Arbutus trees of Vancouver Island's northwest coast. They stand as metaphors for resilience, beauty forged through adversity. These venerable beings thrive in a harsh landscape, shaping their own path through time and trial, much like my own spiritual journey. In their tangled limbs, I see reflections of growth, struggle, and transcendence.

I am excited to share a newly completed artwork with you, titled "Autumn Stillness." This 12" x 12" painting is an acrylic composition capturing the serene lakeside scene, inspired by the tranquil beauty of autumn in the Okanagan Valley. Of course, it captured my heart first. I have painted the sky in the ribbon-like halo formation so prevalent in the Okanagan Vallery – an anomaly that caught my attention when I first arrived in this area and continues to trail across my work.
2023
As 2023 comes into its last week on the calendar, I have been reflecting on my art practice and my life. It has become apparent that my art has moved along with my journey to healing and being. It is not a journey of smooth sailing and no storms. But, it is one I have never had to walk alone. and, as my heart leads, my paintings evolve into their own. Wishing all my creative friends a path that takes you to your most secret place not so you can stay there alone but so you can mine that emotion and experience and share it with the world in a way that only you can make happen. It is the greatest gift you can give yourself and others.I have adopted a new guiding mantra: From my heart to yours - with love. No matter what.

One of my happy places: Crescent Beach in Surrey, BC. When a marine fog rolls in off the Pacific Ocean, I cannot resist the mood, the serenity, and the sense of peace that rolls in with it. Asbeck Lane in Crescent Beach holds the essence of a homey Canadian lane flanked by real families enveloped in a soft blanket of mist with the warmth of the late morning sun slowly peeking through the veil of softness of a spring morning throughout the neighbourhood. I just could not resist painting this memory.

As I drive and wander through the valley, there is something that draws me into the secluded pond or stream. When I stumbled on the gem that inspired this painting, I was struck by how the beauty reflected on the surface belied the depths of the living organism beneath. Nature so gently and miraculously replicates this to the depth of love or grief as we move through our lives with the darker corners providing the background necessary for the beauty of life lived. My art never falls too far from my heart and 2022 was a year of exploring that depth.

This work was inspired by my childhood memories of winter on the Canadian prairies. When I close my eyes and give into my memories, I can hear the crunch of my footsteps on the evening snow as my nose quivered with the icy air. I love to paint winter in all her glory - it was fully embedded in my heart long before the struggles of highway white outs and spinning tires going no where. As a child, winter was playing crack the whip on frozen sloughs, tobogganing on forbidden hills and the pure joy of building forts and raging snowball wars. As an adult, the colours and solitude of an evening winter stroll cling like a hug holding that child with a light but loving touch.

May I Have This Dance

A commissioned work, the romance of the twin pines swaying on the projection of land was incorporated into the piece as a recognition of the couple who requisitioned it. A commission like this is painted to size with a colour pallette in mind. These clients were amazing to work with and gave me freedom to express within my style and heart. Although they were given opportunity to weigh in at about 75% completion only a few tweaks were added. They are thrilled with the result and and I am so very grateful for their contniued support and interest.

Yellow Lake beckons me to stop and gaze in wonder everytime I head to the west coast. In the early morning, the sun is coming up behind the mountain and sketching "halos" over the landscape. The water evolves as the time of day and season varies. I have captured this on my camera hundreds of times and painted it but a few. However, the feeling carries forward into many of my works as I jourey through these valleys.
